The act of toy camera photography is a kind of solitary playfulness. The subjects of the recent series of portraits are wholly absorbed in a world of imagination beyond their immediate environment. The pictures are effectively self-portraits of the artist and her relationship with photography, also drawing on memories of childhood games – solitary but epic.
Leila has been using toy and retro cameras since 2004 including a Holga, pinhole, Polaroid, Panoramic and Lubitel in her recent series.
